Discrete transformers offer layout flexibility; a MagJack integrates everything into the jack and saves space.
Which data rate must the transformer support?
It must match the PHY speed (e.g. 1000Base-T, 10GBase-T). We choose to match the chipset.
Which PoE class?
The PoE requirement (802.3af/at/bt) determines the right transformer. We dimension it to the power class.
