Product description

Battery monitoring IC for multi-cell Li-ion systems

The KA49701A is designed as a battery monitoring IC for multi-cell lithium-ion battery systems. The device supports up to 17 cells connected in series and is intended for battery systems with voltages up to 85 V. This makes it suitable for compact battery monitoring and protection circuitry in industrial energy systems.

Precise voltage and current acquisition at IC level

The IC integrates a 14-bit voltage ADC for cell voltage monitoring together with 16-bit low-speed current measurement and a coulomb counter. It also provides 5 analog inputs for thermistor-based temperature monitoring. This architecture supports BMS designs that require continuous tracking of cell condition, pack status, and thermal behaviour.

Built for protection and status monitoring

Core functions include overvoltage and undervoltage monitoring, overcurrent and short-circuit detection, and temperature-related monitoring. Through alarm pins and the SPI interface, status information can be reported to a microcontroller. The IC also supports external cell balancing, low-side N-MOSFET control for CHG and DIS, and an integrated fuse driver for secondary protection.

Interfaces and integration into BMS topologies

For system integration, the IC provides an SPI interface up to 1 MHz with CRC and watchdog timer, 4 GPIOs, dedicated TMONI inputs, and measurement inputs for cells and current sensing. This makes the device suitable for BMS architectures that combine measurement acquisition, protection response, and host communication in a compact monitoring IC.

Suitable for industrial battery applications

Target applications include pedelec, e-bike, UPS, server backup systems, power tools, and energy storage systems. The IC is therefore well suited to battery monitoring tasks where multiple Li-ion cells must be supervised safely and integrated into higher-level energy management electronics.
